Back in the 1950’s Tom spent a good part of his otherwise mis-spent youth working in and
hanging around Paul Young’s shop in Detroit. These years of direct contact
with Paul and Bob Summers left and indelible mark on a young man who has now
come full circle and is offering his own Young influenced rods to bamboo
aficionados. Tom’s fly casting and fishing experience over the past 45
years has directly influenced his development of taper modifications which are loosely
based on the designs of Paul himself. Over the years Tom has also built
some truly fine Kentucky and Pennsylvania Rifles with stock and metal work that
has made yours truly positively drool. His most recently built rod came
across my desk a while ago and caused a similar reaction to that of the rifles.
Tom is building his rods in the Detroit area on a part time basis, so his annual
output is quite limited. The aesthetics and overall build quality of his
rods are excellent in every measurable way but somehow his rods are really more
than just the sum of their parts. Tom Ciemiega truly understands the physics and
mechanics of casting a fly rod and is able to translate a bit of that magic
understanding into every rod he makes. His rods are lovingly built,
beautifully finished and worth every penny of their modest price.
