A. Taransky Bamboo Rods
When Nick Taransky first contacted me about his
rods, I was impressed enough by his top quality work to want to present
him with the ultimate challenge. "Can you build me a FAST action
three-weight?" 'No problem’, he said. “In an 8 foot three-piece rod?"
'Sure!' Hah! I thought. I've never seen a TRULY FAST, dry fly action, 3
weight in a 3-piece eight footer from anybody! Plenty of medium and slow
action rods around, but never a classic dry fly type action! Especially in
my favorite configuration, three-piece! In my opinion, just about the
perfect small fly dry fly rod.
Well! He went and just DID it! This rod is all I'd
hoped for, actually more!. It is fast and responsive, throws a DT3 line with a 12" loop,
exactly where you aimed it! Feels as good as 20 feet as is does at 60 feet
AND weighs LESS than 4 ounces. I am thrilled to introduce this newly
discovered master builder to my customers and friends.
The Monaro Series represents Nick's Best
Quality rod. These rods are
built from a single culm of bamboo with MIRROR tips. The second tip is
identified with a second trim wrap at the tip-top. The bamboo is flamed to
a Dark Golden Honey color with contrasting light color nodes and finished
with traditional gloss varnish. Hardware consists of Nickel Silver
ferrules and reel seat components with hand finished Hardwood reel
spacers. The ferrules are over-bound with silk matching the cane color,
and protected by a machine turned ferrule plug.
The grip is the classic tapered Cigar with a slight
recess to accommodate the heel of the hand. Rods up to 7’6” (and the 8
foot- 3- weight) are fitted with a down-locking cap and ring seat. Rods
above 7’6” have a threaded up-locking reel seat. The stripping guide is
AGATE plus Snake Brand guides wrapped with
Goldenrod Silk. Fitted with a beautifully figured Mallee Burl wood
seat with bright N/S Cap & Ring hardware and a classic Cigar shape grip.
The ferrules are beautifully thread wrapped and fitted with Bamboo Ferrule Plugs,
(Metal on the Presentation Grade). The Monaro Deluxe rod is fitted
to a handmade KANGAROO or COWHIDE leather rod case and poplin cotton rod
bag. The current wait for one of these fine rods is approximately 6 to 8
months right now, but I expect that to increase after this introduction.
The Standard
Monaro Series comes in an aluminum rod case and cotton poplin rod bag.
The Monaro Deluxe is fitted to a hand-crafted Kangaroo Leather Rod
Case and cloth bag.
The Presentation Grade Monaro Series is
available in leather case only with incredible gun style hand engraving on
the ferrules and metal parts and hand cut Mayflies in various stages of
development and a trout on the butt cap. Rods with fully engraved metal parts
usually adds about $750 to the price. These rods surpass anything you've
seen lately.

N. A. Taransky MONARO Rod Models
6’8” #3. This is a classic F.E. Thomas taper.
With very fine tips and a swelled butt. A lovely rod for small streams
and small fish. Medium Dry fly action for presentation casting up to 30-40
feet. Two piece only.
6'9" #4/5/6 "Monaro 45"
A very fast dry fly action 4/5 weight, which can also handle a DT 6
weight. Suited to sight casting for cruising fish to distances of 60 feet
and beyond. Don't let the size fool you. This rod is built for big trout,
and has loads of power in the butt, both for long distance presentations
and playing fish
7’0” #4/5. Payne 98 tapers. A classic taper
from one of the masters of American rodmaking. A smooth medium-fast dry
fly action with fine tips and a gentle swell in the butt. Presentation
casting up to 40-50 feet. Two piece only.
7’3” #4/5. This is a medium taper, modified
from the Paul Young “Driggs River Special”. A very versatile rod, able to
cast a short line with accuracy and delicacy, while still having the power
to cover fish at distances of 40-50 feet. A nice taper for dry fly
fishing, but with a supple action also well suited for nymphing or fishing
small wets. Three piece only.
7’6” #5. Payne 101. A classic Payne taper
with a tip which will deliver long, fine tippets accurately, and a swelled
butt, giving the rod a smooth, powerful presentation at distances over
50-60 feet. Suited to dry or wet fly with a DT5 line. Three piece only.
8’0” #3. A silky 3 weight with fine tips for
those wanting a longer, lighter rod. The generously swelled butt moves
most of the rod action into the top half, meaning that the rod retains a
progressive feel uncommon in a rod of this length. A true dry fly action
for presentation casting up to 40-50 feet. Three piece only.
8’0” #6. Gillum. A powerful rod, for fishing
larger rivers, or lakes. This rod has a swelled butt which gives it
authority for making presentations at distances up to 80 feet or more.
Three piece only.
