Doug's rods have become quite collectible, but still just don't cost as much; and are a lot more amenable to being fished on a regular basis, than are the "too valuable to fish" rods they so beautifully emulate. This rod was built for trout and light bass use. A beautifully finished rod with lightly flamed cane, a dark Walnut reel seat, bright Screw lock hardware, Super-Z style ferrules and staggered node construction. Doug's excellent wrap, finish and detail work highlight and compliment the even-toned flamed color of the bamboo. 3/2. #8. 5.9 oz. Medium/Fast. Maple Burl U/L N/S S/L. Honey Translucent t/Cinnamon. Varnished. Steelhead Killer, Now built only to custom order. This rod model had been long awaited as it went through the design and testing process. Some pretty fussy outdoor writers and fly fishing authors were involved in this rod's creation and testing. All offending nodes are removed in construction of every Eden Cane rod. The results are nothing short of amazing. The action of this exciting rod is one of the smoothest I've ever cast in a heavyweight cane rod. It is designed to punch a WF8 line and a big, wind resistant fly into a breeze, yet, it is beautifully balanced and does not hammer the caster. This rod seems tailor made for the Triangle Taper 8 Line and Canadian, Icelandic and Russian salmon rivers. In cloth rod bag and custom made hard leather rod case by Arne Mason Unused.         13420. EDWARDS - GENE. 6'9". DELUXE SPIN ROD. 2/1. 6/10#. . Cork dual ring. Brown t/Yellow. Varnish. Autographed Deluxe Model. This wonderful old Spin rod was built by Gene Edwards around 1950. The rod was made for 6 to 10 lb line and 1/4 ounce lures. Spin rods from high quality makers are very scarce and very good bets for appreciation as collectible rods. The tip on this rod is 2" shorter than the butt, but all the wraps are factory originals, so the deduction is that the rod was broken at the ferrule and both ferrules were factory reset by Gene thus shortening the butt by 1 inch and the tip by two inches, all work done at the ferrules, so the action was not badly compromised. In the original labeled rod bag and replacement aluminum case. VG. $175.00.

13149Edwards.jpg (35717 bytes)13149.   EDWARDS - E.W. & SONS.     7'11".   Edwards Special.
2/2.   #5/6.   4.25 oz.   Fast.  Walnut. S/L.   Brown.   Varnished.   This E.W. Edwards & Sons rod was made Circa 1935-40 in Connecticut. It is a classic example of the very desirable, "Golden Years", quality-built Edwards rods and remains in clean, basically original condition. The inscription "Edwards Special" is written in script on the shaft in White ink. All the guides including the red agate stripper and the silk wraps are in fine condition and are original. The original varnish remains, but has been given a recent overcoat to freshen it up. Just the stripper wrap and the two male ferrule wraps are redone, as well. One tip has had a short section scarf repaired in at the tip to extend it to original full length, action and taper. The tip-tops are new replacements.  The cloth bag and the aluminum rod case are both original. The "Special" part of this rod is the fact that it was custom built, in equal sections, an inch less than 8 feet with a perfect dry fly action for a DT5/WF6 line. The action of this rod is quick and quite smooth, just lovely with the fine dry fly tips. It is delicate enough to protect fine tippets which gives the rod more universal capabilities. Edward's medium cane color is extraordinarily handsome and nicely complimented by the medium brown color wraps. An unusual Edwards in sound, ready to fish, condition.    E.    $975.00.

13348. HALSTEAD - GEORGE. 6'9". TROUT. 2/2. #4. 2-1/2 oz. Medium/ Fast. All Cork Black Aluminum S/B. Bronze t/ Olive. Varnished. This is one of the rarest rods I've ever encountered and in some ways is a bit of a mystery to me. It is the only 6'9" Halstead, I've ever seen and I am uncertain if that is the original length. Like all Halstead rods, this one displays a soft tan colored cane with dark places in it from his heat treating process. The present owner states the rod was refinished a few years ago by the now deceased rod maker, Ken Simmonds of NC. The light brown/bronze color silk wraps are tipped with Olive and are quite understated and lovely The grip is cigar shaped. The cork is clean showing no fishing use since the re-do. The slide band and butt cap are of turned aluminum to reduce weight and finished with a finely knurled edge. The name "G. Halstead" is inked on the shaft along with "6'9". 2-1/2 oz". One of the tips has a hook dig over wrap between the last snake and the tip-top that matches the thread color perfectly. You can feel no difference between the tips. The action of this rod is almost mesmerizing with a depth of sweet power capable of turning over the fly and leader at both short and long distances. I've handled over 25,000 classic rods. During all that time I can only recall less than a dozen George Halstead rods. Nearly all of these were above 8 feet long, with only one at 7'6" and one at 6'0" in length, and never any near 7 foot. The point is, that by comparison to the numbers of ultra desirable Payne, Leonard, Thomas, Edwards, Gillum and Garrison rods I've handled during that time, the true scarcity of ANY rod made by this top grade maker really hits home. The ferrules are oxidized Payne style Nickel Silver and the female ferrule is a special "step-down style to accommodate the ferrule drop. The rod comes in a handmade rod bag and a standard Cal-Air rod case. Regardless of the parentage of this rod it remains in mint restored condition with good tight ferrules, straight blanks and un-abused varnish and wraps. The rod feels very Halstead like and has an "as good as they come action" for a 6'9"/ 4 weight line rod! It is in perfect fishing condition and will make someone a wonderful trout rod. This mysterious little rod is indeed quite a prize!   M/R. $1450.00   SOLD

13392. HARDY. 8'0". PALAKONA. 2/1. #6. 4-1/4 oz. Med/Fast. Bakelite reverse S/L. Red t/Black. Varnished. Built in 1968. Excellent all around trout rod, perfect with a DT6 line and capable of nearly anything you ask of it for serious fly fishing. With the original ferrule plug. This superb dry fly rod was later replaced by the PHANTOM models in the 1970's which were the last of the Hardy bamboo rods for a long hiatus. This rod is lightly fished in the original cloth bag with hang tag and a later added black finish aluminum tube,as nearly all Hardy cane rods from this period were shipped to the States with no rod case to save shipping costs. Frugality at its best. E. $750.00.

13405.   HEDDON MODEL 125 EXPERT.  7'6".  3/2.  #5.  3-1/2 oz.  Medium/Fast Dry Fly. Brown Tenite S/L.  Antique Gold t/Black.  Varnished.  The famed Heddon 125 Expert Model in the SELDOM found 7-1/2 foot Three Piece Design. Size 1-1/2 ferrule. The light ferrule size with the accompanying delicate trout action is another of the most desirable fishing models of the Heddon rods. This rod has had an expert scarf repair done by Wes Cooper, just above the ferrule to restore one of the original tips to full length. It has been recoated with varniish over the original to freshen up the appearance and remains in very good condition overall and ready for stream duty. Rods of this scarcity almost never turn up anymore. Comes in the original labeled bag with the bag tag there and perfect. The case is the correct labeled Heddon aluminum case. Very desirable rod model with a delightfully smooth dry fly action.  VG.   $750.00.

13475. HEDDON. 7'6". MODEL 17 BLACK BEAUTY. 3/2. #5. 4.37 oz. Medium/Fast Dry Fly. Black Tenite S/L. Black. Varnished. The famed Heddon Black Beauty in the Ultra Scarce 7-1/2 foot THREE PIECE DESIGN. Size 1-1/2 ferrule. Early Model from the 1930's with "HEDDON" inscribe across 3 flats in a spiral up the rod shaft. The light ferrule size with the accompanying delicate trout action is another outstanding feature of this most desirable fishing model of the Heddon rods. This rod is in mostly original condition with the female butt ferrule re-oxidized and the fly keeper replaced being the only non-original features of the rod. It is a not an absolutely perfect cosmetic specimen, especially for the fussy collector, but is likely one of the sweetest fishing rods you'll ever enjoy using. Rods of this scarcity and ready-to-fish condition almost never turn up anymore. Comes in the original labeled bag with the bag tag there and perfect. The case is a modern aluminum replacement. Very desirable rod model with the ultimate collector interest due to its rarity. E. $1300.00

All original lettering replicated including the 1-3/4 ferrule size. The mid section is 1-1/4" short from a ferrule rest during refinish with no effect on the feel or performance of the rod. Straight, tight and sound with lovely varnish and in nearly perfect fishing condition. Sweet action 8 footer for a DT45 or WF5 line. Superb light trout rod.  Professionally refinished to first rate fishing condition. Needs only water. Original hang-tag and cloth bag and Heddon factory case.   NM/R.    $695.00

Hoffhines boasts an action based on Payne 98 tapers and casts just like the original with a wonderfully balanced action for a #4 line. The unusual aesthetics of this unique rod feature a pencil flamed finish and dark tone to the bamboo and the rod is fitted out with a Swelled Butt, carbide stripper, two-up node spacing, perfect workmanship and finish, and very smart looking, gleaming varnish. All the hardware is oxidized and works well with the darker tone of the rod. This rod is exceptionally well built with a lot of eye-pop and a delightful action. At this price it is a steal. In the original bag and case. E. $975.00.

PROTOTYPE.   2/1. #3. 2.3 oz.. Medium/Fast. Koa N/S S/B. Clear Tan t/Brown. Varnished. In four short seasons., Bernard Ramanauskas, owner of Freestone Rods and the designer and sole builder of both the EDEN CANE and SCOTT SC RODS has defined a new standard of highest quality, finest performance, hollow-built rods in designing the line of models he painstakingly privately builds for the Scott Rod Co. The results of all this labor intensive effort have already become become legend with each years production selling out long before they can be built and delivered. No real surprise when you reflect on the now common knowledge that his NODELESS Eden Cane rods simply
outperform equivalent conventionally built rods, period! No wonder, then, these rods have been so well received with that level of design talent behind them. The folks at GRAY'S SPORTING JOURNAL backed that up by awarding the Scott production model SC653, the "Gray's Best" Award in 2008 when this model was added to the Scott product line. This rod is of moderately flamed color bamboo with translucent Clear Tan t/Brown wraps and Pressed Nodes, Each of the guide wraps boasts single thread wrap tipping in the center of each guide wrap, a touch unique to Bernard's detail work. The N/S Super-Z style ferrules are oxidized as is the N/S slide band seat hardware. The gently swelled butt is offset at the grip by an oxidized N/S nose check which brackets the Standard Cigar grip. The taper of this is designed to place a DT3 line wherever you want it, with no effort on your part. It does that, easily, yet somehow it retains the ability to present the fly softly and with grace, and protect ultra fine tippets, a lovely combination. The perfect head-water rod.                   12976. TARANSKY - NICHOLAS  A.    6'0".    Monaro MODEL.   Tea Stick PRESENTATION Grade Rod.
2/2. #3/4. 3.5 oz. Fast. Bamboo Dual Ring. Translucent Bronze. Oil Impregnated/Waxed. When Nick Taransky first contacted me about his rods, I was quite impressed by his top quality work and immediately wanted to bring his rods to our US customers. Little did I know, just how much rod building talent was tucked away in his little corner of Australia! He has just sent me this incredibly well done work of art that throws a DT3 or WF4 line a country mile and is only 6 feet long and less than 4 ounces "heavy". Why such a "heavy" rod weight for such a small rod? Look at the handle and reel seat! They are formed out of six strips of bamboo with a pronounced grip swell and put the extra weight right where it belongs, in your hand! Rather than fitting a cork grip and wooden reel seat, a large butt swell was used to form the grip and reel seat. This required double building the butt section of the cane. The under grip and swell area was then hollow fluted before glue-up to retain a light feel of the rod in the hand. The seat was turned down to accommodate slide bands, and flamed/scorched for additional character. The rod was finished with a hexagonal butt plate, and clear wraps to maximize the visibility of the cane beneath. A honey agate stripping guide reflects the flamed color of the bamboo. It is magnificent to look at, but it is even more comfortable and practical than you would ever expect and the rod balances perfectly with a small Hardy Flyweight or Featherweight reel. It is fast and responsive, throws a DT3 line with a 12" loop, exactly where you aimed it! Feels as good as 20 feet as is does at 60.AND weighs LESS than 4 ounces. The Monaro Series is Nick's Best Rod. This rod is built from a single culm of bamboo with MIRROR tips. Fitted with a perfectly formed, six-piece grip and reel seat (all double-built AND hollow-fluted to reduce weight) of bamboo that is actually an extension of the six strips that form the rod butt. The butt cap is oxidized N/S in a hex-shape and I still haven't figured out how he got those two N/S oxidized reel seat rings in place! The ferrules are beautifully oxidized with a bamboo ferrule plug for the female. As if there was not enough detail work lavished on this rod, Nick decided to house it in it's very own slim-diameter, hand made, six-sided wood rod case formed of alternating Jarrah and Spotted Gum strips. This gorgeous piece of work is housed in a cloth outer sack that matches the cloth rod bag within. If you are impressed by top quality work in a totally unique rod, a faster rod action, very tight loops, and significant distance coupled to fine-tipped accuracy, and enjoy the delightful lightweight feel of shorter bamboo fly rods and appreciate a dark flamed bamboo finish, then this is the rod for you! This is a one-of-a-kind rod built to expose as much bamboo to the eye as possible. This rod was made to celebrate Tonkin Cane, or "Tea Stick" Bamboo (as it is known in China) as a rod making material., hence the "Tea Stick" moniker. Sure to prove a wise investment as Nick's reputation for exceptionally fine work continues to reach more and more bamboo fans.   BRAND NEW.   $1895.00.

        13293. TARANSKY - NICHOLAS A. 7'3". MONARO - DRIGGS.

impressed by top quality work, a faster, yet fuller working rod action, very tight loops, and significant distance coupled to fine-tipped accuracy, and enjoy the delightful lightweight feel of shorter bamboo fly rods and appreciate a dark flamed bamboo finish, with ferrules and hardware set off by decorative, hand-done, metal engraving, then this is the rod for you! The rivers in Tasmania and New Zealand are gin clear, the trout are huge, smart, spooky as hell, and the ultimate challenge! It is pretty near impossible to "sneak up on 'em",  so you'd better be able to cast 40 to 60 feet with ease and accuracy, even with a 5 weight line! That is precisely what Australian Rod Maker, Nick Taransky designed this delightful dry fly rod to do with the help of an Paul Young Driggs taper. It is fast and responsive, throws a DT4 or WF5 line 60 feet with a 12" loop, exactly where you aimed it! The Monaro Series is Nick's Best rod. This rod is built from a single culm of bamboo with MIRROR tips and a lovely Agate stripper. Fitted with a beautifully figured Red Mallee Burl wood seat with bright N/S S/B hardware and a classic Western Cigar shape grip. This was a rod built by hobby builder Todd Webb of Montana a number of years ago. Todd did some interesting things with this rod giving it a set of 8013 tapers to fire a DT5 line perfectly. Next he built the blank using node-less construction reducing rod weight and adding power. lastly, he did some innovative ferrule work using composite slides on the ferrules virtually eliminating future wear from oxidation.
