If you want "ready to go", contemporary fishing rods, then back-cast to the Classic Rod section. All rods listed here may require some repair to be restored to fishing condition OR are those that may be very old, or may have significant historic value, or may have unusual features or rarity that make them of strong interest to the collector. They may be in perfect condition or they may require considerable repair to make them whole again. Antique and Collector rods generally are special rods, that perhaps should not be repaired so as to preserve their scarce originality. All have been checked for soundness and are worth restoring. All are accurately described as to condition. Handyman Rods that require repair will be so stated. No bag or case unless specified. All these rods are sold "AS IS" with no return privilege.

REEL SEAT CODE:

Batt.   Standard Orvis walnut down locking seat.

S/L or D/L.  Screw lock (down locking seat).

Rev. S/L or U/L.  Up locking screw lock seat.

S/B.  Single slide band (cap & ring) seat.

C/R or cap & ring.  Same as S/B seat.

Skeleton.  Two sliding bands only.

Dual Ring.  Same as skeleton seat.

N/S.  Nickel Silver hardware.

Full N/S-S/B.  Seat barrel, slide band and hardware are Nickel Silver.

 

ROD/REEL CONDITION CODE:

P-Poor. Structurally sound. Needs major refinish.

F-Fair. Needs only minor work to fish.

G-Good. Shows use and routine care. Needs no work to fish.

VG-Very Good. Average condition. Shows light to normal use and is ready to take fishing.

E-Excellent. Above average condition with light use only.

N/M-Near Mint. Close to new. Barely used.

M-Mint. AS NEW. Never Used.

M/R-Mint Restored. Professionally refinished to new condition.

               31268.  Abbey & Imbrie STEEL fly ROD.  9'0".  Riverside Steel Rod.  3/1.  Black Paint.  Made by Bristol- Horton for A&I in the 20's.  In complete original  condition and featuring guides, brass ferrules, chromed. detachable handle stamped "Riverside". Some corrosion present, but will clean up pretty well. Needs only the tip-top loop soldered on. In the original bag.  F.  25.00.

 

30307.jpg (35617 bytes)           31307. UNMARKED CHUBB/MONTAGUE LANCEWOOD FLY ROD. 10'0". ANTIQUE. 3/2. All Metal Slide Band. Green. varnished. This is a rod from the early 1900's that started out as a 10 footer. The ferrules on the butt, mid and one tip have been reset and the rod is now 3" shorter. Interestingly, the extra tip remain full original length. The guides on the butt and mid are the original agates and flip rings, the two tips are redone with snakes. The rod come in its original fitted wooden form case, in a cloth bag, in an outer aluminum tube. It should be treated to a complete refinish and will make a fine antique, display rod. F. $195.00.

 

31304SewellD.jpg (31928 bytes)                  31304. DUNTON - SEWELL. 8'6". ANGLER'S CHOICE MODEL 106. 3/2. #6. 5.3 oz. Medium/Fast. Full Alum S/L. Brown t/Yellow. Varnished. A Sewell N. Dunton & Sons, Angler's Choice rod in fishable condition as is with a DT6 line. Original except for reset female ferrule on the mid section resulting in that section being 6" short. All other three sections are full length. Would profit from a replacement of the mid with a matching Montague rod section and the line size would drop a full size with the correct mid in there. After that work, heat straightening and refinish this would be a really nice fishing rod. Complete with the original bag and properly labeled case. F. 175.00.

31299Hardy.jpg (35984 bytes)         31299. HARDY. 8'6". DELUXE. 3/1. #6/7. 4-3/4 oz. Medium/Fast. Bakelite rev S/L. Red w/Red Intermediates. Varnished. This wonderful old Hardy demonstrates the level of craftsmanship that Hardy was famous for. Built in 1949. The rod is mechanically sound, straight and tight. The wraps all appear to be in good condition. Features and agate stripper and top-top and classic English Perfect Circle guides. The rod comes in the original bag with hanging tag and the factory Hardy aluminum case. painted black. Only the varnish is bad, having softened and distorted in the Florida heat while in storage. Rub it down and re-coat it with fresh varnish and you'll have a fantastic heavy trout or Smallmouth rod. Perfect with a DT6 or WF7 line. F. 350.00.

Made in 1960 anf fitted with Hardy's unique "twist-lock" ferrules Butt cap is finished off with a rubber knob. Fitted with perfect circle guides throughout. Rod is tight and sound. The varnish is in excellent condition, ready to go fishing. Needs no work. Lots of power for a #7/8 line. Comes in the original bag and an add-on plastic case. E. 295.00.

 

31291Heddon'sBaitRod.jpg (33173 bytes)          31291. HEDDON'S. 5'8". EARLY BAIT CAST. 2/1. 1/2 oz lures. Brass slide lock trigger reel seat. Jasper w/ Jasper intermediates. Varnished. Unusual find. Very early Heddon Bait cast with brass reel seat stamped "HEDDON'S" Slide lock is of Nickel Silver and is fitted with a trigger. No other markings. Butt carries an Agate first guide with red wraps. Tip is fitted with trumpet guides and a red agate tip-top and is done in Jasper wraps. Ferrules are original Heddon. No Bag or Case but well worth the trouble to restore to fishing condition. F. 75.00.

 

31235.       Heddon ?? UNMARKED 5'0”.   Bait Cast.     2/2.     Nickel S/B.     Red w/ Red Intermediates.     Varnished.     A distinctive little swelled butt on this rod suggests that it might be an early Heddon or other higher grade production Bait Caster.    Butt Guide and tip-tops are Agate.    Handle missing butt hostel, otherwise Appears original..    No bag or case.                F.    40.00

 

               31308. JAPANESE COMBO ROD. 5'4" & 8'0". GOLDEN TIGER. 3/2. #6. Medium/Fast. Reversible Chrome S/L. Jasper. Varnished. Typically poor quality construction common to ALL post war Japanese made rods. However, the rod sections are all full length and ready for refinishing. Butt carries the remains of the original paper decal showing the model name. The 3 piece fly rod is 8'0" and the 2 piece casting rod is 5'4" long, with reversible chromed reel seat and grip. No bag or case. Great for learning how to restore a bamboo rod. F. $35.00

 

31292Landman.jpg (51917 bytes)     31292. LANDMAN -?? ANTIQUE FLY ROD. 9'3". VERY EARLY FLY ROD. 3/1. Wet Fly. Nickel Silver S/B w/ side rails. Red w/Red intermediate wraps. Varnished. Late Nineteenth Century fly rod likely made by John Landman of Brooklyn as a higher quality trade rod for one of the period NY tackle houses. Features a very pronounced swelled butt produced by laminating each strip of bamboo with an alternating strip of Cedar created an awesome looking rod. Usually fitted out with a small single action click reel. Comes with the original felt covered formed wooden rod case. The tip is 4" short. Appears to be in original fair condition. F. 125.00. SOLD

 

31231.  LEONARD.  9'6".  Special Tournament.  3/2.  #8.  6.0 oz.  Medium.  Full N/S S/B.  Red tipped Dark Red w/ Red Intermediates.  Varnished.  Late 1930's Leonard Special Tournament heavy trout or light bass and salmon rod with everything mostly original. Some guides have been replaced and redone and the second tip is 6" short. Original cloth bag and Leonard brass capped aluminum case.  Full Nickel Silver slide band seat is stamped "The Leonard Rod, H.L.Leonard Rod Co., Makers. Fine tips and nice action provide a smooth casting rod. Nice collector. Needs complete redo. Poor to Fair original condition. An ideal steel heading rod when redone.  F.  295.00.

 

31294Milward.jpg (44717 bytes)     31294. MILWARD. 9'0". HEAVY TROUT. 3/2. #7/8. Med/Fast. Cork S/B. Red w/Red Intermediates. Varnished. Made in England circa the 1950's with all brass fittings and hardware. Fitted with oxidized ferrules and Universal Style slide band seat. Tapered butt cap is finished off with a walnut knob. Fitted with perfect circle guides throughout. 2nd tip is a later add-on, likely by Milward. Rod is tight and sound. The varnish is in average condition, fishable as is, but it would profit from a rub-down and re-coat in order to restore its luster. Lots of power for a #7/8 line. Comes in the original bag only, no case. G. 250.00.

         31261.  Montague/Chubb ?? UNMARKED fly ROD.  8'6".   3/1.  #5/6.  Medium.  Full Metal S/B.  Varnished.  This is an early1920's production rod by Montague/Chubb in poor condition. It is complete with a Chubb Style Slide Band reel seat and replaced ferrules. The mid section is 3" short and the rod is still quite fishable. Needs guides, Heat straightening and refinishing and in the hands of someone with a bit of know-how and talent, this rod will come back to an excellent fishing tool. No bag or case.  P.  35.00.

 

31281.  Montague.  9'0".  Clipper.  3/1.  #5/6.  Medium.  Tenite D/L S/L.  Bark Blue T/ White.  Varnished.  This is a 1940's Montague Clipper with a very nice light trout action for a DT5 or WF6 line.  All sections straight and  full length.  Needs nothing to fish. No Bag, but has original cardboard case.  VG.  100.00.

 

31280.  Montague.  9'0".  Clear Lake.  3/1.  #6/7.  Medium.  Chromed Brass S/B.  Red.  Varnished.  This is a 1930's Montague with a  Medium action for a #6/7 line. All sections full length.  Needs nothing to fish. No Bad or case.  VG.  75.00.

 

31276.  Montague.  9'0".  J. C. Higgins.  3/2.  6/7.  Medium/Fast.  Chromed Brass S/B.  Green.  Varnished.  After a little bit of waxing and clean-up, this rod will step right out and fish for you just fine. Made for Sears by Montague in the 1940's. Comes in an Army Surplus M8 Machine Gun Barrel Canvas Sack that was used by Montague after the war to package and sell their rods.  G.  75.00.

 

31290Senate.jpg (34590 bytes)      31290. SENATE - ANTIQUE FLY ROD. 10'0". VERY EARLY FLY ROD. 3/1. Med/Fast. Nickel over Brass S/B w/ side rails. Red t/Green w/Red & Gold decorative intermediate wraps. Varnished. Late Nineteenth Century early fly rod made when wooden rods were still the normal gear. SOLD AS THE "STEEL VINE" ROD. Unique round six-strip construction with the grip above the sheet cork handle and with no fore grip. Richardson style guides, stirrup tip-top and agate stripper. Made to look like the wood rod of the day and used mostly for dapping large wet flies for bass and trout rather than fly casting as we know it. Usually fitted out with a small single action click reel and a level silk line, gut leader and large, gaudy wet fly. Great display piece in totally original unmolested condition with the original heavy canvas outer sack. VG. 150.00.

 

                           31251. SHAKESPEARE.  8'6". Model 1308-7. 3/2. 6/7. 5 oz. Fast. Alum. Spring Loaded Rev S/L. Red t/Gold. Varnished. A basically quite sound and tight faster action fly rod in fair overall original condition. Some guides are rusty so it will need new guides and varnish to restore to top condition. The second tip is 1" short. Still has the original shaft decal under the alligator varnish. Original Bag only, no case. Neat old vintage rod with an excellent fishable action that will be fun to use after a proper refinish. F. 135.00.

 

          31256.  SHAKESPEARE  FLY ROD.  9'0".  Umarked.  3/1.  #6.  Medium/Fast.  Reverse S/L.  Varnished.  This is a 1930's production rod by Shakespeare in poor condition. It is complete with a restorable reel seat and good N/S ferrules. The original mid section is 6" short and while still fishable, the rod includes a replacement mid-section blank that is beginning to delaminate and will require re-gluing if you choose to use it. Or you can opt to refinish the rod as found. Either way, in the hands of someone with a bit of know-how and talent, this rod will come back to a decent fishing tool. No bag or case.  P.  40.00.

 

31306Shakes.jpg (30359 bytes)              31306. SHAKESPEARE. 9'0". MODEL 1362-9. 3/2. # 8. Med/ Fast. Red. Anodized Alum Rev S/L Was Black/Orange Jasper. Varnished. Vintage production Shakespeare from the 1940's with partial original decal and markings preserved. Rod has been stripped for refinish, ferrules re-glued, ( one male tip ferrule is split but still usable), a new grip and new tip-tops were installed in preparation for refinish. Only needs new guides, wraps and re varnish to finish out. Take it fishing after that. Strong action for a #8 bass bug taper fly line. Neat uplocking Red Anodized aluminum S/L seat similar to the Granger reel seat. No bag or case. G. 75.00.

 

         31269.  SHAKESPEARe FLY ROD.  9'0".  Unmarked.  3/2.  #5/6.  Medium/Slow.  Full N/S S/B.  Antique Gold w/full Intermediates.  Varnished.  This is an early 1930's production rod  likely made by Edwards for Shakespeare in fair original condition The hardware and fitting are high grade and the rod portrays the work of early Bill Edwards. The original decal is MIA as is a single snake guide. It is complete with good N/S ferrules, a re-usable Agate Stripper and Agate tip-tops. All sections are full length and still quite fishable. The rod needs a new wraps and varnish in the hands of someone with a bit of know-how and talent. This rod will come back to a real treasure.  In the original cloth bag and early Shakespeare aluminum case.  F.  150.00.

 

31305SB.jpg (30339 bytes)           31305. SOUTH BEND. 8'6". MODEL 346. 3/2. #5. . Med/Fast. Red Tenite rev S/L. Jasper. Varnished. Neat old SB in sound fishing condition. All sections original. One tip 5" short at the top with reset top and throws a #6 line. Other full length tip handles a #5 nicely. The varnish and all else is fine. Mid section guides rewrapped with non matching thread. None-the-less, the rod is ready to fish and casts a delicate DT5 line. Complete with the original decal., decal and labeled cardboard case missing case top. G. 145.00.

 

31302FET.jpg (26679 bytes)   31302. THOMAS - F. E.    9'0".  DIRIGO. 3/1. #5. 4 oz. Wet Fly. Nickel Silver S/B. Red w/Red intermediate wraps. Varnished. Lovely, slower action wet fly rod circa 1930's. Butt and mid are in original condition. Tip is a replacement F. E Thomas tip, but from a later Special model with different wrap colors. Needs a new size #10 N/S male ferrule and stripping and re wrapping to match to original rod sections. No Bag or Case, but well worth the trouble to restore to fishing condition. Light action 9 footers are really not easy to come by. F. 225.00.

 

 

31183. TRUE TEMPER. 4'6". Square Steel Bait Cast Rod. Mercury Model. from the 40's. Trigger grip square steel bait casting rod fitted with metal guides and tops. Marked "Mercur" on the shaft decal. Red painted cast aluminum trigger handle detaches from the one-piece rod shaft. The tip nestles into a fitted vinyl case for shaft and handle. E. 15.00

 

       31273.  winchester.  9'3".  Armax  #7243.  3/1.  #5/6.  Medium.  Nickel S/B.  Deep Red.  Varnished.  Winchester brand, "Armax" rod. Edwards built.  Ornate winding check, Richardson n/s stripper, n/s ferrules.  The rod been modified to this shorter length from 9'6" by resetting the ferrules and the mid is 10" short. Needs no work to fish with. and feels pretty good. In a cloth bag only, no case.            F.  65.00.
