The One-Pfoot Story.
One-Pfoot reintroduces its complete line of replacement
parts for Pflueger Medalist reels, still America's most popular line of
fly reels. In 1988, when first introduced, the One-Pfoot
replacement foot for Pflueger Medalist reels, met a growing need to
adapt the simple but rugged Medalist to the reel seats being crafted for
high end fly rods. More importantly, there was a need for this venerable
reel to fit the older bamboo classics of yesteryear. At that time, many
customers requested rod restorers to reconfigure the reel seats on their
fly rods so that it would accommodate their favorite Medalist reel. It
was obvious that a simple reel foot conversion would be a much easier
and less costly remedy. When first offered to the fly fishing market,
the One-Pfoot conversion kit became an instant hit with Pflueger
Medalist owners.
After a long hiatus,
there is an even greater demand for this unique but
elegantly designed reel foot. Today, more than ever, with the upsurge of
custom rod makers and custom reel seat designers the need and the
urgency was clear to warrant reintroduction of this highly sought after
product.
So, dig out Dad's and
Granddad's old Pflueger reels, recondition and up-grade them with One-Pfoot
products, and enjoy fishing a great American Classic!

THE
One-Pfoot
Here's
the product that started it all - the Pflueger Medalist replacement reel
foot! One-Pfoot components are made from the highest
grade aluminum (T6061 Grade) and stainless steel (303) to insure that
the One-Pfoot will last as long as Granddad's favorite Medalist.
Available in two
One-Pfoot
1: for 1492, 1494, 1495, 1496 model reels.
One-Pfoot 2: for 1492-1/2, 1494-1/2, 1495-1/2,
1496-1/2 and 1498 model
reels.
Either Size: $22.95
Hard Coat Drag Plate
The
One-Pfoot drag plate is made of T6061 aluminum with a sapphire hard coat
applied to it. This hard coat not only builds up on all surfaces, but
actually penetrates into the aluminum substrate to form a long lasting
durable finish to this most vital part. With 8 indents on both sides, it
is reversible for left and right hand retrieve. The aluminum drag plate
makes the perfect replacement part for that tired worn out nylon drag.
$21.95
A-2 Drag Plate
The "piece
de resistance" for all you Pfluegerphiles. We are now manufacturing a
limited quantity of drag plates made of A-2 tool steel that have been
hardened to rugged 62 Rc (Rockwell). This beautiful piece has that "old
time" look and feel that is very reminiscent of the older original
Medalist ratchets. As with our other drag plate, 8 indents on both sides
make the A-2 fully reversible for left and right hand retrieve.

Counterbalances
Our approach to
designing counterbalances originated with Herman Voss, a brilliant reel
designer from Florida. He had been making counterbalances in his small
shop during the 1960s and 70s. Our conversations with him, back then,
led us to develop our own improved version of a very functional part.
Due to demand, we recently developed a low profile counterbalance
crafted in nickel-silver—this finely machined beauty will dress up any
Pflueger Medalist!

little product originated with Herman Voss, a brilliant reel
designer from Florida. He had been making these counterbalances in his
small shop during the 60's and 70's. Our conversations with him back
then led us to develop our own improved version of this functional all
stainless steel part. These finely machined beauties
will dress up any
Pflueger Medalist! This counterbalance is most generally adapted to the
more modern (1960's and onward Medalist) that have 0.250 diameter spool
holes. These finely machined beauties will dress up any Pflueger Medalist!
BRIGHT Finish Only. $16.50
Nickel Silver
Counterbalance - Small Diameter*
- HIGH PROFILE.
These small diameter
counterbalances are made especially for those older
Medalists that have the 0.220 diameter spool holes. Over the past year
we have had a number of customers tell us that our standard 0.250
diameter hole counterbalance, which fits many of the later model
Medalists, did not fit well on the older 1300, 1400 and 2000 series
reels. This little “gem” of an add-on is just the answer. The all
stainless counterbalance and stainless backing screw have been highly
polished to eliminate any burrs that might interfere with line control
and smooth line running. They come with a hex head wrench and are easy
to install. They will add beauty to any vintage Pflueger Medalist
without detracting from its value.

*Guidelines for Selecting Correct Size of
Counterbalance
When ordering please specify the spool hole
diameter of your Pflueger Medalist. If you are unsure of the hole
diameter (the outer hole opposite the handle) of your Medalist reel,
here is a quick little test that will help you determine the correct
counterbalance for your reel.
If you can drive a #2 pencil eraser into the
hole with a little force you probably have the 0.250 diameter hole
spool and would order the large diameter counterbalance. If the
eraser looks like there is no chance of going through the spool hole
you will probably need the small 0.220 diameter counterbalance for
your Medalist. If you are still unsure, please feel free to contact
One-Pfoot.
Click Pawls
Here's a part that many
of our customers have asked for over the years. The older click pawls
that run against some of the older drag plates do wear out. We had some
of the older drag plates hardness tested and found that they were made
of an extremely hard material (right off the Rockwell hardness chart).
As you can imagine this does not bode well for the click pawls over
years of use. We made these click pawls of a tough exotic stainless
steel that has superior wear capabilities and is very corrosion
resistant. To this kit we have added two (1 spare) stainless steel
replacement springs that will add new life to the tired braking system
of your favorite Medalist. Please see "Pfine Tuning Your Pflueger"
below. $16.50

Click pawl springs are compression springs. Because
our springs are made of stainless steel instead of the original bronze
alloy and because all Pfluegers were not created equal, some owners
may notice greater compression when using these replacements. In some
cases, the new springs may even drive the click pawl up against the
drag plate, making it difficult to turn the spool. This can be easily
remedied. By gently grinding one end of the springs using a bench
grinder or belt sander, or even a dremel-type tool, you can shorten
the spring to custom-fit your own reel. This process, if done
properly, may take four or five gentle grindings and fittings to get
the perfect feel and sound you desire. The trick here is to be patient
and work slowly.
Replacement Springs
Spool Cam Release Springs
This is a fancy name for the Spool Latch Cover
springs. A firm, strong, stainless spring that will put new life into
your Medalist. See “Pfine Tuning Your Pflueger” below for making that
exact fit and feel with your replacement spring kit.
Price for package
of 3: $6.50
Click
Pawl Springs
Here is the slippery spring that we most
frequently see abused or lost on the Medalist reels. They are famous
for flying across the room or workshop while dismantling the drag
systems on the Medalist—only to be picked up later in the vacuum
cleaner! Keep a supply on hand. Price for
package of 3: $6.50

On Pfitting Springs
In the process of fitting your new replacement springs you may find
subtle differences in the sound and feel of these new springs. This
is due primarily in the difference of materials between the old and
the new springs. The compression springs from older Pflueger
Medalist are made of bronze alloy materials while our newer Spool
Cam Release and the Click Pawl Springs are manufactured of a high
grade stainless steel. These new springs will ensure a long life and
maximum corrosion resistance.
To insure a proper and pleasing fit to any of the above spring kits,
it may be necessary to grind a little off one end of the new
replacement spring. This can easily be done by hand on any number of
shop tools such as a bench grinder, belt sander, or even a hand held
dremel type tool. We advise that you work slowly while grinding and
shortening the springs. A trial and error method seems to work the
best. Try grinding very small amounts off the spring and then
fitting it to the reel - sometimes as many as four or five fittings
are needed—until you get a pleasing and desirable feel and sound.

Brake Adjusting Screws
How many of these little puppies have we
seen destroyed, cracked, and shrunken over the years? You no
longer need to worry as we are now manufacturing a replica of
the early Medalist metal brake adjusting screw.
One-Pfoot's brake adjusting replacement screw is made of 304
stainless steel featuring the delicate CNC turned 4-36 left hand
thread that has been used forever by Pflueger. This part, along
with One-Pfoot's Spool Latch Cover and Replacement Handle, will
allow you to resurrect your old Pflueger by replacing the
plastic parts that frequently deteriorated on this beloved reel.
$23.95
The brake adjusting screw comes with complete installation
instructions and illustrations. See "Pfine Tuning Your Pflueger"
below to determine correct size for ordering.

Because the threads on each brake adjusting
screw must be undercut to mate with the adjusting screw bracket,
it is important that you let us know the Pflueger Medalist model
you are using when ordering.

Replacement Screws
|

“The Old Screws”
One of the most asked for items over the
years has been the small oval head 3-48 screws that were so
often used in the building of the early Medalists. We had
these stainless screws cold form threaded—which makes for a
stronger screw—and then brought into our shop to shape the
oval heads and slot them. A final buffing and polishing
makes this the perfect replacement for all those older
Medalist reels.
|

"The New Screws"
Here’s the oval slotted head screw that
most Medalist owners are familiar with. This highly polished
stainless screw will enable you to resurrect those
discarded, idle, Medalist reels.

We ask that our customers please take a few
minutes to read this text and carefully examine the accompanying
pictures at right before ordering replacement screws. You may
get a better idea of the screws that you need for your reel by
taking one out of your reel and comparing it to the diagram.

 PILLARS
Pillars at last!
One-Pfoot is now producing Sculpted
Pillars for the narrow (1492, 1494, and 1495 models)
Pflueger Medalists. We are now pleased to offer this
product that many of our customers have asked for over the
past few years. After research and investment in tooling,
we have manufactured an attractive and functional
replacement for those straight, chrome-plated, brass
pillars that grace many of the more modern (early 1950s to
present) Medalist.
These delicate looking Sculpted
Pillars are made to look like the original pillars that
made the early Medalist such a distinctive reel. They are
machined here in our shop of 6061T6 aluminum and then hard
coat anodized to insure a long life with a minimum of wear
and scratching. The older original Medalist sculpted
pillars were pinned to the reel frame with a Type U drive
screw. Our Sculpted Pillars are drilled and tapped with a
roll form thread in each end insuring the best possible
fit for the common 3-48 Medalist screws. These handsome
add-ons will truly dress up your Pflueger Medalist!

3 Pillars with Old Screws or New Screws: $27.95

Replacement
Handles
The One Pfoot Replacement Handle Project
has taken on quite a life of its own. It is truly a works in
progress. In more than a year of research and
experimentation we have yet to come up with the perfect
material for a replacement handle.
Over the years Pflueger produced a wide
variety of injection molded handles (see attached photos on
this page), particularly in the early years of this reel.
Many of our customers, Kerrigan Almey being but one, request
this product in the old style, yellow synthetic ivoroid type
material called Pyralin. Unfortunately, DuPont has not made
this material for more than a half century. But, not wanting
to disappoint our customers, we began a search for a
suitable replacement material.
In our search we began by scouring the
custom writing pen market, the pool cue trade, and the
custom knife makers of America. We experimented and machined
a wide variety of plastics, phenolics, bone, and stone based
materials with varying degrees of success. But what our
search has all boiled down to is—what looks beautiful and is
functional on a writing pen sometimes just won’t stand up on
a reel handle. The original Medalist handles were tough!
The One-Pfoot Replacement Handles are currently
made with strong synthetic materials, available in the
following colors at
$16.50 each.

During our conversation with customers via
e-mail, on the phone, and at shows, the one question
consistently asked about this product continues to be: “How do I
change the handle on my reel?” Although the instructions
accompanying the Replacement Handle will give more detail, it is
simply a matter of gently grinding off just the metal nub which
is the tip of the handle rivet. With the end of the handle rivet
removed, the old handle will easily slide off. Then place the
One-Pfoot Replacement Handle on the existing handle rivet and
tap on, as instructed, the nickel-silver cap that is included in
the package.

The Young Pfoot

Announcing New
Products!
The "Old Young Pfoot"
and The "New Young Pfoot"
|
After purchasing some Medalist One-Pfoot parts a few
years ago, Ron McAlpin, known to many of you as
"Bulldog", approached one Pfoot about building a
replacement foot for the J.W. Young line of reels. The
difficulty, Ron explained, was that the feet on the
J.W.Young reels did not fit some of the distinctive and
diminutive slide band seats that were the mainstay of
many of the early classic American bamboo rods. This
problem was most apparent on the later postwar reels
that most of us know as ending with "ex" in their name -
the Pridex, the Condex, and the Beaudex, to name a few.
Based on the samples that Ron sent us, we designed a
foot with the more user friendly tapers and radii of the
original One-Pfoot. According to Ron, the new foot
worked.
We then went to work designing a foot for the older,
prewar J. W. Young reels. Here, as Ron explained, the
problem was a little different. Many of the older prewar
feet were much too long to fit on our modern day reel
seats. The truncated reel foot that we came up with is
just the remedy for the extra long prewar J. W. Young
feet.
We have made both the "New Young Pfoot' and the
"Old Young Pfoot" in a lightweight aluminum bar stock
model, and, in a solid brass model for the more classic
look.

"The New Young Pfoot"
The "New Young Pfoot" was especially designed to fit
the more modern postwar J. W. Youngs. It will allow you to
use your J. W. Young reel on the most delicate of slide
band reel seats and the narrowest of screw lock seats.
The easiest way to tell if you need a "New Young Pfoot"
for your reel is to carefully detach the existing foot
that is on the reel. By looking at the foot where it
mounts on the reel, observe whether it is flat or curved.
If your reel foot has a flat surface
then your reel will take a "New Young Pfoot"
|

"Old Young Pfoot" Brass
"Old Young Pfoot" Aluminum
The Old Young Pfoot"
The "Old Young Pfeet" are the feet that were designed
for use on those older classic, unmarked J. W. Youngs.
Our pfoot has been shortened from the original long
square ended foot that is most usually seen on the older
Youngs. These new pfeet will easily allow you to convert
your prewar classic Young reel so that it will fit the
reel seats of yesteryear, and also, the reel seats of
the present modern era.
Again, you can tell whether you need a "Old Young
Pfoot" by carefully taking off the original foot that
came on the reel and examining the where it mounts to
the reel. If the original foot has a
curved surface, then you will need to order
the "Old Young Pfoot".

TRIANGLE TAPER FLY LINES. ..
Of the many innovations that Lee Wulff contributed to fly fishing, the
Triangle Taper fly line is perhaps the most popular. The Triangle Taper
offers the greatest delicacy of any fly line and of greatest importance
to the bamboo fly caster, the Triangle Taper is a continuous forward
taper in the head of the line, the first 36 to 40 feet, depending upon
the size application. This provides the most efficient transfer of
casting energy as it unrolls because the heavier line is constantly
turning over lighter line. The design also gives you a more delicate
presentation because the weight of the line is away from the fly. It is
also the finest Roll Casting line for up to 60’ casts. This combination
of a longer weighted section and a light running line make the Triangle
Taper cast like a weight forward line for distance, when needed. The tip
end can be customized to your casting style by cutting it back (by
inches) for the desired performance level.
This unique Taper design has the added benefit of improving the casting
performance of many fine bamboo fly rods. Because of the unique weight
distribution and configuration of the line, it allows for a bit more
weight to load the rod as the cast is extended, satisfying that
sometimes very subtle need for a bit more line weight to properly load
your cane rod and bring out its best casting characteristics. This is
something that really must be experienced to be believed! I’m not
claiming these lines will make you a better caster or make a bad rod
great, but, in my experience, (over the past 15 or so years that these
lines have been around), I’ve found they consistently sweeten the feel
of rods that are on the cusp, making them more enjoyable to use. When
planning the right size for your rod, add a line size to the stated
weight, i.e., the #2 becomes more of a 2/3 line, a #3 more of a 3/4
line, and so forth. If you have a cane rod that needs tuning and often
seems to cast better with the next heavier line, (but you fear you are
over-lining it), try the appropriate Triangle Taper line. You may be
pleasantly surprised! Floating Fly Line (#99906) The original,
easy casting Triangle Taper fly line. It will cover all normal fly
fishing situations. 90’ length. Color: Ivory.

PHOENIX SILK
FLY LINES
The
world’s first solid braided silk fly lines with an oil dressing was
produced in England in 1880 by Eaton and Deller.
In 1908, P.D Malloch of Perth produced the most famous and
successful of all silk
fishing lines, the KINGFISHER. This more than any other, set the standards
for the manufacture and performance of all oil dressed silk lines.
WHY
SILK?
Improved casting powers in both distance and accuracy.
Silk gives the correct weight for smaller diameter.
Less bulk landing on the water, therefore less disturbance.
Will not stretch or crack.
Less wind resistance.
Soft and pliable (after break-in).
Will last for years and years.
Unaffected by extreme variations in temperature.
Quicker, smoother lifts from the water.
Taper built in at the time of braiding.
Gives more speed and positive feel.
Made by craftsmen with painstaking care.
REVIVING
A TRADITION...Cheaper,
synthetic fly lines and glass fiber rods signaled the demise of
Kingfisher. There was a long hiatus where silk lines were not available.
To the delight of those who set value by tradition, Noel Buxton, of
England, in the late 1970’s, began hand crafting silk fly lines in the
established manufacturing traditions of Kingfisher. The result was the
Phoenix precision built fly line made of the finest quality Pure Chinese
Silk with tapers built-in by braiding. These lines facilitated the most
delicate presentation of the smallest flies.
Noel
also demanded that the lines be of an intermediate density.
When greased, the line floats high on the surface film, un-greased
it acts as a “slow sinker” and by de-greasing the tip, there is a
“sink-tip” of variable proportions. This gives three options from one
line.
The
double tapered profile enables reversal of the line for longer use.
The
special “proofing” of the line gives no “reel” memory and only
minimum stretch to aid better hooking.
HANDCRAFTED
QUALITY...Making
silk lines by these traditional methods to produce the finest product
possible is very labor intensive and time consuming, much as split cane
rod building. For over 16 years, Noel Buxton manufactured the world’s
finest silk lines in accord with a tradition spanning over 100 years. Now
after two decades bamboo rod maker Mike Brookes continues making Phoenix
lines in the same way for today’s fly-fishers who value the finest in
tradition and performance.
The
oils and varnishes ensure that the line is waterproof and supple. The
Phoenix Line is so stable that it does not leach linseed oil and become
tacky with age.
The special
finish produces a line that shoots well, with the minimum of flash while
maximizing silk’s added advantage of a smaller diameter for a given
weight.
